A unique background of artistic expression
As a child, Kenneth Gregston was an avid collector of rocks and fossils. In school he enjoyed sketching and clay sculpting, aspiring to become an artist and geologist. With a family in the oil business, Kenneth grew up surrounded by core samples and drill bits, eventually becoming a Geologist. But his love of art was always with him. His work took him all over the world, and wherever he found himself, he took art classes at nearby colleges. Ultimately, a class in clay and stone sculpting was the catalyst to his leaving geology to open his own studio.
Kenneth now divides his time between sculpting in New Mexico and rock and mineral hunting in Wyoming. He sculpts in alabaster, marble, jade, and onyx, finding the qualities of each stone lends its unique attributes to his work. Kenneth especially enjoys the complexity and beauty of the female form, following a period of sculpting in Italy, where this classic subject could be found in sculpture everywhere.
A love of science and art become one in stone
Direct stone carving has become Kenneth's method of artistic expression. He loves the opportunities presented by the greater challenges and deeper creative expression the medium provides. The viewer can see the humanistic and naturalistic features in the stone with rough and smooth surfaces in the work. As a Geologist in the field or a stone quarry, Kenneth sees geological history. As a sculptor, his energy is derived directly from the ancient rugged physicality of the stone becoming the finished work.
